Business marketing approaches usually start with “how do I get on the first page of Google?”, but since the rise of AI-powered search experiences, priorities have shifted.

Alongside SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), businesses are now investing in AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) to increase visibility across AI-driven search platforms.

At the same time, community-driven websites such as Reddit are appearing more frequently in Google search results, as users increasingly seek authentic opinions and real-world experiences.

Businesses must now consider not only how their own content ranks, but also how their brand is represented and discussed across social media platforms and online communities. This makes search visibility more dependent on conversation and reputation than ever before.

WHAT IS REDDIT?

The UK government has announced plans for a social media ban for under-16s from Spring 2027, preventing children from creating or accessing accounts on major platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and X.

The move follows growing concern about the impact of social media on children’s wellbeing.

Ofcom reports that children aged 8–14 spend nearly three hours online each day, with around two hours on social media. Education bodies including the National Education Union and NASUWT have also raised concerns around learning, behaviour and mental health.

Platforms will be required to introduce stronger age-verification systems, potentially including facial recognition or digital ID checks for new or unverified users, with some existing accounts verified using prior data.

The government is also considering further protections for 16–17-year-olds, including feature limits, overnight restrictions, and measures to reduce excessive screen time.

The ban is expected to take effect in Spring 2027, giving platforms around 18 months to prepare. Ofcom will publish guidance on age-checking methods and oversee enforcement, with further details on under-18 protections expected in July.

HOW WILL IT IMPACT B2B BUSINESSES?

Reddit describes itself as “the heart of the internet, where millions of people get together to talk about any topic imaginable.”

It is a social media platform comprising more than 100,000 active communities, known as subreddits, each organised around specific topics or interests.

The platform functions primarily as a forum-based network, where users submit content in the form of text posts, images, or videos. This content is then ranked through a community voting system, with upvotes and downvotes determining visibility. Posts that receive higher engagement rise to the top of their respective subreddits, shaping what users see most prominently.

As of 2026, it is estimated that over 80 million people use Reddit as a search engine each week, highlighting its growing role not only as a social platform but also as a discovery tool for information and discussion across a vast range of subjects.

WHY DO PEOPLE USE REDDIT?

At its core, Reddit is a network of communities built around user-generated content. The social media platform Reddit offers direct access to conversations between real people who have firsthand experience with a topic.

Users often find Reddit content valuable because it is community-driven. Posts and comments that provide useful insights naturally receive more upvotes, helping quality content rise to the top.

As the internet becomes increasingly saturated with AI-generated content, Reddit’s appeal lies in its human perspective.

GOOGLE VS REDDIT: TWO DIFFERENT MODELS OF SEARCH

Google and Reddit represent fundamentally different approaches to information discovery.

As the most used search engine in the world, Google helps users find information by continuously scanning and indexing billions of web pages through automated programs called web crawlers.

When a user enters a search query, Google’s algorithms analyse the words and intent behind that query before searching its index for relevant content. It then ranks results based on factors such as relevance, quality, authority, and usefulness, displaying the pages it considers most likely to answer the user’s question.

Historically, Google has primarily surfaced content from websites, publishers, brands, and other online sources. However, forum and discussion-based content have become increasingly prominent in search results, reflecting growing demand for first-hand experiences, opinions, and community-driven insights.

Reddit, by contrast, operates as a community-led discovery platform built around discussions rather than indexed web pages. Users ask questions, share experiences, and participate in conversations within topic-specific communities known as subreddits.

Content is ranked through upvotes and downvotes, meaning visibility is driven by community engagement and perceived usefulness rather than traditional SEO signals. As a result, Reddit is increasingly being used in a search-like way, particularly for product research, troubleshooting, recommendations, and opinion-based queries where context and personal experience matter as much as factual information.

WHY IS REDDIT BECOMING SO POPULAR?

According to Ofcom’s Online Nation 2024 report, Reddit has now surpassed both LinkedIn and X to become the fifth most widely used app in the UK, sitting just behind YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

While its original purpose was to facilitate discussion around shared interests, Reddit has increasingly become a place where users search for quick, direct answers. In February 2025, CEO Steve Huffman confirmed that Reddit’s search function now has more than 70 million weekly users.

This shift has been supported by new features such as Reddit Answers, an AI-powered Q&A tool introduced in late 2024. It uses large language models (LLMs) to generate short summaries from multiple Reddit threads, helping users find information more efficiently.

At the same time, traditional search engines are facing criticism, with users often citing low-quality or cluttered results. As of Q1 2026, 76% of global internet users report encountering misinformation on at least one social platform each month. In contrast, Reddit’s human-generated discussions are increasingly valued for their authenticity and real-world insight.

Reddit’s influence has also grown through partnerships with major tech companies. Google uses Reddit content to support its AI-driven search results, with discussions frequently appearing in AI Overviews, while OpenAI also draws on Reddit data to train its models. These partnerships highlight the platform’s growing role in shaping AI-powered search and discovery.

HOW DOES REDDIT SHOW UP IN GOOGLE SEARCH?

Google regularly ranks Reddit discussions for queries where user experiences or recommendations are relevant. Individual Reddit threads can appear alongside traditional web pages, giving searchers direct access to community discussions from across the platform.

Google’s AI now also dedicates space above traditional search results to discussions and forum posts, often linking directly back to the original conversation. Rather than showing only articles from publishers and brands, these AI-generated summaries aim to combine information from multiple sources across the web.

As one of the largest areas of publicly available discussions and opinion-based content online, Reddit is frequently included in this pool of sources. This means Reddit content may influence what users see in AI-generated answers, even when they do not click through to Reddit itself. As Google’s search experience becomes increasingly AI-driven, Reddit remains a significant source of information that can be incorporated into these summaries.

HOW DOES REDDIT SHOW UP IN GOOGLE SEARCH?

Reddit is no longer just a forum – it is an emerging search and discovery channel that influences both Google rankings and AI-generated answers.

While it is not built around traditional SEO, its structure naturally supports modern search behaviour. The combination of question-led content, authentic discussion, and community validation makes it highly effective for capturing intent-driven visibility.

The platform’s question-and-answer format, vast amount of indexable long-tail discussions, and community-driven ranking system make it highly effective for surfacing direct answers in search environments. At the same time, its large volume of natural, conversational content and consensus-driven discussions provide valuable signals for generative AI systems, which often draw on Reddit data to reflect real-world language, opinions, and emerging trends.

For businesses, the strategic implication is clear: SEO remains foundational, but visibility is increasingly shaped by how content performs across Reddit, AI systems, and answer-based search environments – not just Google alone.
