AI SEARCH VISIBILITY: WHY SOCIAL MEDIA MATTERS

A new study from SE Ranking, which analysed 100,000 keywords across different brand niches, found that links to social media platforms appeared in 67.66% of Google AI Overview responses, 32.39% of Google AI Mode replies, and 8.4% of ChatGPT answers.

Social media should no longer be viewed solely as a channel for audience engagement. As AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews increasingly shape how people research businesses, compare services, and discover brands, social content has a role to play beyond the platforms on which it is published.

For marketers, the implication is clear: measuring social media by reach, engagement, and follower growth alone risks overlooking its wider contribution to brand visibility. The question is no longer just whether your content reaches the right audience, but whether it helps your business get discovered when potential customers turn to AI for answers.

WHAT ARE AI OVERVIEWS?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear prominently in search results, often above traditional organic listings. They draw on information from multiple sources to provide a direct answer to a user’s query, with links to supporting sources.

For users, this can make finding information quicker and reduce the need to visit multiple websites. For businesses, however, it introduces a new challenge: visibility no longer depends solely on ranking in traditional search results. Brands also need to consider whether their content is useful, relevant, and discoverable enough to contribute to the answers AI presents.

This shift is closely linked to the rise of zero-click searches, where users find the information they need directly in search results without clicking through to a website.

AI SEARCH IS CHANGING WHAT VISIBILITY LOOKS LIKE

As AI users increase month on month, the data these tools require information from is growing. Visibility is no longer just about where a webpage appears on Google; it is also about which sources inform the answers users receive.

Social media is part of this picture. Publicly accessible content across platforms such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, and Facebook can provide information that AI-powered search experiences draw upon, creating additional opportunities for brands to be discovered outside their own websites.

Research from SE Ranking highlights the scale of this relationship. Its study found that links to social media content appeared in 39.34% of Google AI Mode responses to branded searches and 48.58% of non-branded searches.

The distinction matters. Branded searches involve people already looking for a particular business, while non-branded searches can indicate that someone is exploring a topic, service, or solution without having a specific provider in mind.

For marketers, this strengthens the case for treating social media as part of a wider search visibility strategy. Consistent, useful content can help establish a brand’s presence across the digital sources potential customers encounter during their research. Social media alone will not guarantee inclusion in AI-generated answers, but overlooking it could mean missing opportunities to be discovered earlier in the decision-making process.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR CONTENT APPEAR IN AI RESULTS

Not all social platforms carry the same weight across AI search tools. The SE Ranking study found that YouTube was the most frequently cited social platform in Google AI Overviews, while Reddit and LinkedIn featured prominently in ChatGPT responses. In Google AI Mode, Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit were among the most commonly cited social sources.

For marketers, the takeaway is not to spread content across every available platform, but to build a presence on the channels most relevant to your industry and customer profile.

Greater visibility also brings a reputational consideration, however, as AI systems can draw on information from independent sources that businesses do not directly control, including third-party discussions, reviews, and online commentary. These sources can help shape how a business is understood, but they may also contain outdated, incomplete, or inaccurate information. Read more on the risks of AI for businesses here.

YOUR BUSINESSES INTEGRATED APPROACH TO AI VISIBILITY

For businesses concerned about their visibility in AI search, the answer is not necessarily to add another marketing channel. It is to make better use of the channels they already have.

Your website remains a foundation for SEO, while social media, content marketing, and digital PR can help build your presence and credibility across the wider web. The opportunity lies in making these disciplines work together, rather than treating them as separate activities.

At EDGE, this is central to our integrated approach to digital marketing. We look beyond individual channels to understand how each contributes to a business’s wider commercial objectives.
