CREATING A DISTINCTIVE SUBIDENTITY FOR AN INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

Developing a unified visual direction that enhances the Summer School experience and works seamlessly alongside existing branding.

OVERVIEW

University College Birmingham’s International Summer School brings together four core learning pathways to give international students a weeklong experience of life at the university and in the city, discovering what a full year of study in the UK could look like.

EDGE supports the university across multiple key events throughout the year, with the Summer School branding project forming part of a longstanding partnership focused on delivering consistent, high quality creative assets.

THE OBJECTIVES

  • Establish a recognisable identity across every event touchpoint.
  • Build anticipation and energy ahead of the Summer School event.
  • Ensure international students felt supported, oriented and part of their community from day one.

DELIVERED THROUGH…

BRAND DEVELOPMENT

A clear identity was created for University College Birmingham’s International Summer School, shaped by early concept explorations into Birmingham’s most recognisable landmarks, including the Bullring and Bull, Birmingham Library, and The Rotunda.

The University’s Summer School branding and identity was designed to work alongside University College Birmingham’s existing branding, introducing a fresh visual layer that added energy and distinction while maintaining alignment with the core institutional style.

Colour, typography, and layout choices were developed to complement the established brand architecture, ensuring the programme felt connected to the wider university while still carrying its own character.

OFFLINE MARKETING DESIGN

Offline marketing design for the Summer School focused on applying the new identity across a suite of physical marketing materials.

Media walls and pull up banners carried the Summer School visuals, creating a clear and consistent presence.

Whilst student facing items. including branded lanyards, certificates and bucket hats extended the identity into other key touch points, helping the programme feel unified from arrival through to completion.

Each asset was designed to sit comfortably alongside their existing university branding while giving the Summer School its own distinct character.

THE RESULTS

An aligned suite of Summer School materials was brought together to create a unified event environment, with the new identity applied consistently across both large format and student facing touch points.

The presence of the Summer School logo across media walls, banners, certificates and merchandise established a clear visual throughout the programme, helping everything feel structured, intentional and connected from the moment students arrived.

“A responsive and easy to work with team who designed a really engaging creative for our project!”
