EDGE BMet and Harper & Lewis

Summary

Harper & Lewis are an independent clothing brand based in Birmingham, who specialise in providing unique and retro style clothing for men, women and children.

They have been a client of ours since 2019, with our expert team supporting them with various aspects of marketing including social media advertising, website updates and more.

Sutton Coldfield College, part of the Birmingham Metropolitan College group, is a further education centre located in North Birmingham. It offers a huge range of A-Level, and vocational courses before students look to go on to university or apprenticeships. Our graphic designer, James, is also a lecturer at the college, teaching the next generation of graphic designers.

The Task

We have a long-standing relationship with the college and have been working with them for several years to help give students the opportunities to work on challenging and engaging projects for a real business. This is why it was important that we picked a brand that their age group could connect with.

Our client Harper & Lewis fit the bill perfectly and were eager to be involved, especially as teenagers are a core part of their target demographic.

They recognised the opportunity would provide them with a valuable insight into what their audience are looking for and what appeals to them, making it win-win for everyone involved. We tasked the students with creating a full marketing campaign, including the design of website landing pages, social media graphics, and video advertisements, to promote H&L’s 2024 Winter Collection.

The students were split into four groups and given a deadline to produce their materials and a presentation for Harper & Lewis to go alongside it. They were expected to carry our extensive market research to find similar successful marketing examples that would guide their decisions and help to generate ideas.

The Results

The nature of the project encouraged the students to venture off campus grounds for a 90s feel, utilising areas of Birmingham like Digbeth and Sutton Park for a retro feel to their videos and accompanying photography. There were common themes of graffiti or brickwork as the backdrop to help convey the retro style.

Our Client Services Director, Karen O’Donovan, and Paul Lewis, Director of Harper & Lewis, attended the project presentations at the end of the assignment. They helped judge and grade the projects and provided feedback to the students from a professional perspective.
The project was a huge success, with every group working hard and putting forward a strong presentation at the end and gaining valuable experience working on a real-life project.

Paul was able to gain a greater understanding into the mindset of his desired audience which will help them refine their strategy moving forward. Impressively, the team members of the winning group were even nominated for a college award due to the outstanding quality of their work.

EDGE’s commitment to helping nurture the next generation of professionals has made a significant impact on our students’ educational journey. The hands-on experience and insights they gained while working on this project are instrumental in shaping their future careers.

We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the students regarding their placements, highlighting the supportive learning environment and the practical skills they have developed under your guidance. The dedication to mentoring and fostering their growth is deeply appreciated.
